Sale Away is an installation in which the viewer operates the orchestra using the keypad of their mobile phone as the interface. The orchestra ensemble consists of adapted household machines. Over 20 Vacuum cleaners playing flutes, 10 vibrating sanding machines fixed to wooden boxes, adapted jigsaws triggering bass drum footpedals and adapted metal angle grinders. In addition to this are at least 70 adapted desktop room ventilators and a series of 50 analogue radios tuned to 50Hz. ie the same frequency as fluorescent lighting. The listeners dial in to the system to play the orchestra. Sale Away was created for the first time in a shopping street in Osnabrück, for the European Media Art Festival. At Le Lieu Unique we presented a site specific version of the installation. Visitors were assigned to play the role of conductor; they could start and stop the instruments with their mobile phone.
