about

n 2014 we were invited by the Köln collective Therapeutische Hoergruppe to create an installation for Brückenmusik. Set up inside the three maintenance access tunnels that form the body of the ‘Deutzer Brücke’ that crosses the Rhein river. The Deutzer Brücke has the reverb of a cathedral but without it’s silence, there is the intermittent rumbling sounds of traffic overhead . For Plan C, Staalplaat Soundsystem distributed throughout the three chambers of the bridge two groups of very different sound producers. In the first segment at regular intervals, tender melodic fragments were emitted from motorised musical boxes and whose punched paper strips acted like a closed loop analogue program. Shadows of the moving tape loops were projected in the tunnel via strategically placed LEDs. Their high-pitched melodies contrasted clearly to the sound of the traffic but were sporadically drowned out by the swelling noise of the trams, this made the listener sensitive to the traffic roaring above the spaces. An opposing function, completely drowning out the total ‘sound happening’, was given to a second group of very simple but extremely effective sound generators. Place alongside the adapted musical boxes were twelve large adapted wooden boxes. Attached to the sides of the boxes were orbital sanding machines. The playing together of several of these mighty- sounding instruments, coordinated by composition at regular intervals, filled each bridge segment with a deep and loud bass tone which drowned the whole sound scenery and stimulated an impressively long reverb created by the high energy levels. When perceived by the visitor from a distance, ie. from one of the neighbouring chambers, the sound happening was reminiscent of a thunderstorm. Staalplaat Soundsystem supported this association with their light installation in the central segment. Here, the duration of the body echo in the material of the bridge was made visible along the stretch of 180 metres by vibration-sensitive LEDs. The little light sources reacted with light impulses to the vibrations of the wooden boxes, and with them the shaking caused by passing trams and heavy goods vehicles. Text by Hubert Steins. Composition and recordings by Radboud Mens, light design by Carlo Crovato and software by Jens Alexander Ewald. www.staalplaat.org/2014/06/26/plan-c/
